Cross-temporal meta-analysis is a newly developed but extensively applied method of quantitative literature review. This approach sorts a series of previous studies which are independent with each other but refer to the same issues in a chronological order, thus the hidden changing patterns of target variables could be observed. This method has now been widely used in psychology, educational research, behavioral science, medicine, economical management and many other areas. The use of cross-temporal meta-analysis in demographic research may contribute to revealing general trends of Chinese population changes by analyzing the results of previous studies on the same topics and with the same methods. In this paper we introduce the basic concept of cross-temporal meta-analysis,and illustrate the methods and procedures involved with a case of fertility research. Problems such as measurement instruments, odd values and their solutions are summarized, and practical applications of cross-temporal meta-analysis in demographic research are discussed.

Analyzing data from "2010 Survey of Children Development in Beijing",schools attended by migrant children can be divided into three types, namely schools of exclusively migrant children, public schools attended by many migrant children and the public schools attended by few migrant children.Migrant children attending different types of schools generally come from different social strata of floating population. There are increasing trends in socio-economic levels, quality of social networks, proportions of only child, and family education expectations and conditions across the three types of schools. No significant differences exist in either school performances or family conditions between migrant and local children in public school attended by few migrant children.

Statistical Analysis of Authors of the CSSCI Population Journals:1977-2009

Abstract1551)      PDF (1046KB)(1011)       Save
Academic papers are an important expression of research outcomes of researchers, and the relationship between the number of authors and number of papers is expected to follow the pattern of research development.Using literature statistics, this analysis systematically and comprehensively examines all papers published in seven CSSCI population journals from the first issue to 2009.The major findings are:(1) the probability distribution of different paper size of authors among the total authors follows the Lotka Rule, and the proportion of new authors and old authors are reasonable in the seven journals;(2) new authors in the seven journals is significantly lower than the optimal value of Lotka Rule, suggesting that the research team is stable, but shows a sign of "aging" of authors due to lack of vitality.

Migrant Population Concentrated Communities in Beijing:Patterns and Trends
Zhai Zhenwu, Hou Jiawei
Population Research    2010, 34 (1): 30-42.
Abstract2291)      PDF (190KB)(2003)       Save
Migrant population concentrated communities have been emerged and developed in the context of urbanization, and has become the major areas of inhabitation for the migrant population in Beijing. The number of Residential Communities accommdating migrant population over ten thousand amounted to 102 in 2000 in Beijing, accounting for 30.4% of the total number of Residential Communities and 74.4% of the total migrant population of Beijing. This situation will not change in the short term, and will result in larger scale concentrated communities with the development of Beijing.Migrant population concentrated communities can be divided into fully-depending,semi-depending and non-depending types according to the relationship with industries. In a dynamic perspective, concentrated communities of non-depending type will transform or disappear when the society implements minimum wage plan and makes upward mobility possible. However, problems surrounding the other two types of concentrated communities could only be settled by industrial restructuring and market redistribution.
